01 September 2026 (Tuesday), 14:00 – 22:00 h

Prepare for having wonderful memories from the SDEWES2026 social event as we have a very special afternoon planned for our conference participants.

There are six excursions available to choose from, as listed below:

GROUP 1 - RED ticket - THE CONTINENT ISLAND

Gran Canaria boasts spectacular natural beauty. The greatest expression of this natural grandeur can be found in the landscapes of the island’s interior, from where protected areas designated as a Biosphere Reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site can be admired: Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains.
We will ascend to 1,500 metres above sea level, enjoying the change in vegetation as we climb. The island becomes greener and more mountainous, and small villages gradually replace the large urban areas.

Upon reaching the interior, we will take a short walk to a natural viewpoint offering breathtaking views of the sacred rock formations: Roque Bentayga and Roque Nublo, as well as the mountain range that stretches across the western part of the island. Weather permitting, we will also enjoy magnificent views of the highest mountain in the Canary Islands, Mount Teide (Tenerife).

GROUP 2 - BLUE ticket - MASPALOMAS

The Special Natural Reserve of the Maspalomas Dunes is one of Gran Canaria’s most iconic images. Located in the south of the island, the dunes cover an area of 400 hectares. The ecosystem also includes the Maspalomas lagoon and palm grove.

We will begin this excursion by heading towards the south of the island, where we will make our first stop at a viewpoint offering sweeping views of this vast natural landscape.

The second stop on the route will be at the Maspalomas lagoon, followed by a short walk to the Maspalomas Lighthouse, an architectural symbol of southern Gran Canaria.

Participants will have free time to stroll along the beach or explore the surroundings of Meloneras, one of Gran Canaria’s main tourist areas.

GROUP 3 - GREEN ticket - NORTHERN GRAN CANARIA

The excursion begins with a visit to the Cenobio de Valerón, one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Gran Canaria. Carved into a volcanic cliff, this impressive complex of more than 300 artificial caves was used by the island’s pre-Hispanic inhabitants as a communal granary. Set in a dramatic natural landscape overlooking the Guía and Gáldar area, the site offers a unique insight into the island’s ancient culture, social organization, and agricultural practices, all while enjoying panoramic views of northern Gran Canaria.

Afterwards, the tour continues to the charming coastal village of Puerto de las Nieves, in the municipality of Agaete. This picturesque fishing port is known for its relaxed atmosphere, whitewashed houses, and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the nearby cliffs. Visitors can stroll along the seafront promenade, admire the natural lava rock pools, and enjoy free time to have a drink or taste fresh local seafood in one of the traditional seaside restaurants. The visit offers a perfect contrast between history, nature, and coastal life, rounding off a memorable experience in the north of Gran Canaria.

GROUP 4 - ORANGE ticket - VOLCANOES AND WINE

This trip offers a unique blend of natural beauty and local flavors in the heart of Gran Canaria.

The first stop is Botanical Gardens (Jardín Canario), a stunning botanical garden located in the Guiniguada Valley. As the largest botanical garden in Spain, it showcases the rich plant life native to the Canary Islands. The guided tour will take visitors through the garden’s well-kept paths, highlighting various ecosystems, from dry deserts to lush subtropical areas. Here, guests will gain insight into the unique flora of the Canary Islands,

This trip includes a stop at the Bandama Crater, an impressive volcanic hollow with a diameter of 1,000 metres and a depth of 200 metres, which once housed one of the earliest wineries in the area.

After enjoying this natural setting, we will head to a small local winery (Finca Escudero), where we will taste the island’s wines and cheeses.

The main wine-growing area of Gran Canaria is located very close to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. For a time, the Canary Islands were among the leading producers of the most sought-after wines in European courts; proof of their prestige lies in the four references Shakespeare made to the “Canariis.”

Bandama is an area of recent volcanic activity, whose volcanic ash is particularly well suited to vine cultivation. It is home to the island’s highest concentration of small wineries, including several historic ones.

GROUP 5 - PURPLE ticket - SURF CLASS

Located in the heart of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Las Canteras Beach is one of the most iconic urban beaches in Europe and one of the main surfing hubs of the Canary Islands. Thanks to its year-round mild climate, consistent Atlantic swells, and vibrant surf culture, it has become a reference destination for surfers of all levels.

The beach offers different surf zones, each with its own character. La Cícer, located at the southern end of the beach, is particularly renowned for its welcoming conditions for beginners and intermediate surfers, making it one of the most popular learning spots in the Canary Islands. More experienced surfers can challenge themselves at La Barra, where faster and more powerful waves break over the natural reef.

During the SDEWES Conference, participants will have the opportunity to discover another side of Gran Canaria through an unforgettable surf lesson at Las Canteras.

Whether you are stepping onto a surfboard for the very first time or already have some experience, professional instructors will guide you through the fundamentals of ocean safety, wave reading, paddling techniques, and standing up on the board. The lesson takes place in a safe and friendly environment, allowing participants to enjoy the thrill of riding the Atlantic waves while surrounded by the spectacular scenery of Las Canteras Beach.

Beyond the sport itself, surfing at Las Canteras is an immersion into the local lifestyle. The beach’s vibrant atmosphere, the sight of surfers sharing waves at sunset, and the unique combination of urban life and natural beauty create an experience that perfectly reflects the spirit of Gran Canaria.

For many conference delegates, this activity will be more than just a sports session—it will be an opportunity to connect with fellow participants, embrace the island’s outdoor culture, and create lasting memories in one of Europe’s most celebrated surf destinations.

GROUP 6 - PINK ticket - TECHNICAL VISIT

This excursion focuses on innovation, sustainability, and local heritage in the southeast of Gran Canaria.

The visit begins at the facilities of the Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC) in Pozo Izquierdo. ITC is a public technology centre that carries out applied research and innovation projects in areas such as renewable energy, water technologies, algae biotechnology, environmental technologies, and engineering.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about some of the research and development activities being carried out in the Canary Islands and how these contribute to addressing challenges related to energy, water management, and sustainability. The Pozo Izquierdo facilities host a significant part of ITC’s technological activity, making them an important reference point for innovation in the region.

The excursion continues to the Salinas de Tenefé, located on the nearby coastline. These traditional salt flats have been in operation for decades and are one of the most representative examples of sea salt production in Gran Canaria.

During the visit, participants will learn about the salt harvesting process, the historical importance of the site, and its relationship with the local environment. The salt flats also provide an opportunity to observe a unique coastal landscape shaped by the interaction between natural resources and human activity.
